Is Plastic Surgery Right for You?
There is no one among us who hasn't looked in the mirror at one time or another and thought there is something about our appearance we'd like to improve. This isn't vanity, it's just wanting to look our best. In fact, research demonstrates that people who are happy with their appearance consider themselves to be healthier, happier, more productive and more successful than do people who wish they could do something to improve the way they look.
The Plastic Surgeons at Straub keep pace with the latest in plastic surgery procedures, yet separate the latest "fads" from procedures that have proven themselves to offer long-term benefits to their patients. To know what is right for you, you'll need to have a consultation with one of the plastic surgeons at Straub. But as general background information, here are some of the procedures you may have heard of and the benefits they can provide.
Treatment of Facial Wrinkles & Blemishes
- Dermabrasion - Mechanical abrasion of the top layers of the skin using a high-speed rotary wheel which softens sharp edges of surface irregularities, including acne and other scars and fine wrinkles, especially around the mouth.
- Chemical Peel - Restores wrinkled, blemished, unevenly pigmented, or sun-damaged facial skin, using a chemical solution to peel away the skin's top layers. Works best on fair, thin skin with superficial wrinkles.
- Laser Resurfacing - Smoothes fine wrinkles of the face using a laser. Softens lines around the eyes, mouth and minimizes facial scars and unevenly pigmented areas. Different frequencies of specific lasers enable the surgeon to select the laser most appropriate for the patient's skin condition and needs.
- Botox® - Temporarily reduces the formation of wrinkles and makes current wrinkles less visible by injecting a chemical into the selected facial muscles to decrease the motion of the muscles.
- Collagen / Fat Injections - Plumps up creased, furrowed, or sunken facial skin. Adds fullness to lips and backs of hands. Works best on thin, dry, light colored skin.
Treatment of the aging face
- Face lift - Improves sagging facial skin and loose neck skin by removing excess fat, tightening muscles, redraping skin.
- Facial implants - Changes the shape and balance of the face using carefully shaped implants to build up a receding chin, add prominence to cheekbones, or reshape the jawline.
- Forehead lift - Minimizes forehead creases, drooping eyebrows, hooding over eyes, furrowed forehead and frown lines by removing excess tissue.
- Nose Surgery - Reshapes nose by reducing or increasing size, removing hump, changing shape of tip or bridge, narrowing span of nostrils, or changing angle between nose and upper lip.
- Hair replacement surgery - Fills in balding areas with a patient's own hair, using a variety of techniques including scalp reduction, tissue expansion, strip grafts, scalp flaps or clusters of miniplugs and microplugs.
Body Sculpting
- Liposuction - Improves body shape by suctioning exercise-resistant fat deposits through a small tube.
- Breast enlargement - Enhances the size of breasts using implants filled with saline.
- Breast lift - Raises and reshapes sagging breasts by removing excess skin and repositioning remaining tissue and nipples.
- Breast reduction - Reduces enlarged breasts by cutting excess glandular tissue and redraping the skin to the new smaller breast.
- Abdominoplasty - Flattens abdomen by removing excess fat and skin and tightening muscles of abdominal wall.
Eyelid surgeries
- Creates a double fold in the Asian upper eye lid. This is done by either removing excess fatty tissue, or in some cases, by a newer method using sutures only.
- Corrects drooping upper eyelids and puffy bags below the eyes by removing excess fat, skin and muscle.
Ear Surgery
- Sets prominent ears back closer to the head, or reduces the size of large ears.
Treatment of Spider veins
- Laser treatment of spider veins in the legs or arms—Causes veins to disappear by sealing them with a laser.
- Sclerotherapy for spider veins in the legs or arms—Causes veins to disappear by injecting them with a solution that seals the vein.
