Are you really ready to travel abroad?
If the call of the wild is growing louder in your ears and you've already purchased that great safari outfit, then it's time to visit Straub's Travel Clinic for those important Travel Shots. And no, we don't mean passport photos.
the Travel Clinic offers a thorough travel consultation for a minimal fee. So don't be caught unaware by the travel "bugs". Call Straub's Travel Clinic at 529-4949 to schedule your appointment. At your appointment they will help answer your travel health questions and administer the appropriate vaccinations, and the immunization that you receive can be recorded. Here are a few pointers to get you started.
Q. What are Straub's Travel Clinic hours? How long does a consult last and how much will it cost?
A. Travel consults are scheduled in the afternoon by appointments only, by calling 5294949.
A consult lasts between 20-30 minutes depending on the complexity of the trip. Any immunizations are an additional charge. Always bring your immunization records with you to avoid needless vaccinations and the immunizations that you receive can be recorded.
Q. What vaccinations are available at the Travel Clinic?
A. Routine vaccinations such as dT, MMR, Pnuemovax and Flu are available at the clinic. Travel vaccinations such as Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Yellow Fever, Typhoid, Polio, Meningococcal Vaccine, Japanese Encephalitis, Rabies, and prescriptions for Malaria Prophylaxis are available. Special vaccinations such as Chicken Pox and Hemophitus B Influenza are also available.
Q. How far in advance should someone get shots when traveling internationally?
A. As soon as the itinerary and plans are set an appointment should be made. This gives the patient different vaccination options as well as allowing sufficient time for any series of vaccines to be administered.
Q. I know what I need, why do I need a travel consult?
A. If your PCP (Personal Care Physician) sends you to our department with a prescription stating a particular vaccination - i.e. Hepatitis A - to be administered, no travel consult will be charged. However, many times travelers will also ask what other shots would be recommended. This then, becomes the start of the consultation.
Q. Does insurance pay for shots?
A. Insurance coverage varies according to each patient's plan. We recommend that you check with your insurance carrier.
Q. Can you get your shots at Straub even if you're not a Straub patient?
A. Yes, however, we do recommend that if you are covered by a non-Straub managed care health plan, that you receive a referral from your PCP, and approval from your insurance carrier. Otherwise, you will be responsible for all charges.
Q. What should I bring along on the trip if I have medical problems?
A. Travelers are advised to check with their PCP if they have health problems prior to traveling. It is recommended that travelers carry a note stating any significant medical condition, list of medications currently being taken, any allergies, and the name and phone number of an emergency contact person and their treating physician. Also, carry sufficient quantities of your prescription medication and a first aid kit. The first aid kit should include over-the-counter medication such as Aspirin or Tylenol, sun block, antihistamine, antibiotic ointment, Band-Aids, anti-diarrhea and calamine lotion.
Q. Do children need to get travel shots too?
A. Yes, just as adults, children need to be protected too. However, we only treat adults, - 18 years and older - in the Travel Clinic. Children need to be seen by their pediatrician.
